Average Joe II: The Finale

Television

Jumping back here and there, the look in Larissa's face as cool and as porcelain for each of the guys. Vapid hunk Chris promptly brushed aside in the penultimate. Showing how fond of Larissa he is, Brian "Awesome" Worth amped up the intensity and orchestrated all sorts of Boston things and intimacy. Starkly contrasting the spaced-out Gil who answered only half of her pending questions and expressed an interest in exploiting his time with Larissa for an acting career.

Between the last few episodes of what kept being referred to as American Joe, her skin greened with the amount of tanning executed. There was no way the editing wasn't going to allow for a major lead-up.

Opting to go with her intuition, she chose looks over brains and heart. A heart which when pressed into a loving farewell hug, proved how sensitive they make lapel microphones.

Larissa Meek's "major secret" was mentioned earlier in magazines. Her previous boyfriend being the romance novel model and enemy of ducks, Fabio. A revelation which led Gil to throw a tantrum and run off leaving Larissa feeling the pain what Brian experienced.

The Doctor and the Boy

Television

Switching back again to the monochromatic stylings of the era, Doctor Who is making for some topsy viewing. Not only has the arc jumped away from the Inferno and colour film of the last leaving things again in the black-and-white, but the strange things are still going on. Like an inflatable chair eating a man alive.

A sedate viewing led into by catching the entirety of a new Astro Boy episode. There was no theme song as earlier hoped.

Sectioned roots and hair from down there

Nothing

Earlier that morning, an electric eel made its four or five metre journey down the gullet of the drain. Cranking and cranking, the black metal coil just kept on going. Minutes later, the end was hit and a massive clutch and grab executed. Defiant, the blockage wouldn't let go of the new intruder in its midst. Much yanking was employed and the reverse cranking upped much determination. At the root of the problem, the neighbour's trees. A massively wrangled mess of albino tendrils and long strands of hair corked from below. Fortunately, such imagery was only glimpsed at as the garbage bin held the monster dark in the shadows of other refuse.

DoFL 34: New blood

Occupied

Crosswords for another lunch, the new girl feeding out of a plastic bread bag, the man who-won't-shut-up sitting at another table. Passing on from the traffic lights of near, hoons shouted "Get a job!" with much gusto as one of the men leaned out of the passenger window. The man who-won't-shut-up moved over to the populated shelter and started with talk that even the new girl was wary of. Fast learner that.

DoFL 33: Anzac respite

Nothing

Designed as a bleed-over from the Sunday fallen of Anzac Day, the public holiday ended up being yet another in a long string of standing stills. Time away from the compound presented itself as either a time to write up a stack of manuscripts or clean things up around the house. The latter was chosen.

A massive box was looked at and small slightly dusty things placed within the refuge that keeps dust to an absolute minimum. Added, a few copies of JET, Mace Windu, kid's meal toys from Burger Kings featuring a few of the Lord of the Rings and a stack of CDs of times past when winning was a monthly thing. Most of the hour was spent looking at the contents of the big box and wondering about nothing in particular.

From beneath the murky depths

Nothing

Quick showers are what's needed now. Attacked with a plunger in the afternoon, the drain spewed forth a sickening and vile concoction of slimy things and wiggly larvae. Either the pipes are blocked or the PVC tubing has collapsed with the surrounding soil coming down hard and making it difficult indeed for water to pass through. Lingering far too long sees the water return up the pipe and the feet wading in ankle high waste water. Not effluent, that's another pipe altogether.

Grim Tuesday

Books

From the February issue of a street magazine named, JET. A street magazine that hasn't yet been sighted on the streets with 3D World, The Brag or even Drum Media. Nice as it is it could be the start of a new focus of prizes. Once they were CDs then for a brief period they were preview passes to movies. Better then the first two, this trend might be a reason to return to reading novels. Those were fun times.

Pumped relief

Writing

Massive headache and a feeling of thick blood trudging through the arteries and veins were the course for yesterday. Planned for a kind of massive writing spree it was not to be. An early morning session focussing on the biceps rendered that too much to bear. Three sets, simple enough, just a half hour to work in and the strain of measured movements party to pumping some iron. With the headache and the blood, the exertion needed somewhere to go. Straight to the back of the head it seemed. Any thought or movement beyond a few minutes cause for the teetering trips into blackout. Lying down and resting might have been fatal. Running around and doing more for the muscles, definitely. An entertaining sensation nonetheless.

German invasion

Nothing

There was, an explosion of sorts. Among the many things to litter the house, Weet-Bix boxes stacked on top of each other. Not many, just three to five. Fluctuation dependent upon the speed of recycling. Ever present are the three 1.3 kgs cartons. Contents within are mostly sorted and most definitely dried. Magazines mostly. Not many, just a few.

Watching one German roach makes its way into the lip of one sparked the suspicion that there must have been some kind of hideout. Or worse yet, a breeding box ripe with the conditions so wanted for pests. Cool, dry and not to mention dark. And yes, there it was. Opening up the box, twenty scatter to the other end in search of some kind of escape. They silently waited while the box was taken over some water. Tappa tappa later and they were swimming madly. Quick buggers they be as they made their ways out and in all directions. Swift stamping and not as messy as anticipated.

DoFL 32: Though Irish, sounds the same

Occupied

Just before the compound numbers depleted for another day, and early too, the Irish asked what was asked by another before, "So why exactly can't you get a job?" All in good defeat and the prevalent desire to sabotage interviews most likely the reason.

Who's back in colour

Television

Jon Pertwee retains his current hold as the aloof and affable Doctor, complete with Who-mobile and all. Now, after an encounter with The Ambassadors of Death in nothing else but black and white, Doctor Who comes back to the Inferno all in full colour. Colour one, none the next. The colours, they be a flipping in and out with no sane link to continuity here.

DoFL 31: Drip drip drip

Occupied

Leaking incessantly since beyond the start of the year, the tap in the laundry used as the kitchen was seen too. The plumber was kitted out in the usual garb of hardy shorts and a short sleeve shirt. His hip crackled and buzzkt from the ears of the walkie-talkie. Nobody looked like they were back in the van. Serious this guy. Minutes later, no more dripping—which was actually a constant stream—of the tap.

Seriously Saturday

Television

Emerging from their own hype generators the announcement by Ch10 on what it was that they believed to be the first ever for Sunday night programming. None of the popularised film-to-television screenings of box office drawcards known to fall ever reliably on Sunday nights. The Godfather II in all its digitally re-mastered state looked like they were going down that route. The one where they ply on the repeats thick and cleaned up.

Instead of the usual movies, they make the move to bring back Goren and Eames in Criminal Intent with newbie NCIS. The latter, promised earlier in the year, invaded so many of the credits it looked like a teaser for something along the lines of a single episode of The Restaurant. Or even the sparse and sporadic slotting of The Shield.

They tried this "all crime" programming with Monk, Dragnet and NYPD Blue on Saturdays before taking the shows away two months later. Right then, back to thinking for a Sunday's change before they do the same.

Radioactive Man: The Official Movie Adaptation

Comics

Bongo Comics took their sweet time on actually getting this one out. Inside covers of some Simpsons Comics proclaimed that having to trust throwing money away to anything, this comic would be it. Months—well more than six—later and the chance to do so finally came. Nothing exactly along the rough edit seen in the suite back when the Hollywood guys raided Springfield. Polished and rushed at the same time. Shoehorns come to the fore when thinking about the story they put in the panels. Constricting. Fleeting. Like a teaser of sorts. Hopes. Another six months until the next issue of Radioactive Man.

Astro Boy

Television

The show is back on and the ads all pointed to the fact that this is a new incarnation. Having no real vivid memory of the original makes that claim a little easier to take as fact. Getting in on ground level with this one, the first episode looked clean and yet old. Like they copied the original series frame for frame with no idea the new kids wouldn't know. Missed out on the opening theme. Don't remember hearing an ending one either.

Phantom Jack #1

Comics

Sitting on the counter awaiting the final sum for the week were Captain American and the Falcon #2, Ultimate Spider-Man #54, Amazing Spider-Man #506 and the new Ghostbusters comic from 88MPH. The decision on choosing Ghostbusters was weighed against that of picking up Phantom Jack. Each had their own reason for being, and neither were Marvel. Too much time eyeing the rest of the shelves and another customer decided to gander at the Ghostbuster comic on top. Soon after that, Phantom Jack took its place.

Attempting to explain away the dialogue and story as being "Marvelized" didn't help. Stilted, laboured and no sense of ease in the words. The art read far better though at times couldn't seem to find itself. Not a great issue and no drive to pick up the following issues. Not sure how Ghostbusters would have fared.

DoFL 30: Recurring loops

Occupied

Two hundred units stacked neatly and ready to ride ship on their way to Peru. The piles grew neatly and slowly scanning themselves into the database. Time left overflowed over into the boxes across and down of the cryptic ripped from one of the weeks' days of late. Fine enough, this was corrupted by the task of having to hand over sound to another unit. Feeling the chirps and crackles translates poorly to the operation. Three hours passed by and not a single hope seen in finding a healthy sound card. Each one cramming the system more than the previous. Three hours spent wading through sharp pins ready for the hint of blood they wait for. Three hours for nought.

Occupied

Long weekends for everybody else means time for more sleep and less work. No need to actually cash it in fortnightly to reap the same benefits. The feeling is better and a whole lot more time is given toward the abysmal desolation and craving caverns. Another day through the compound without having to stand the stench of futility and hopelessness.

Kings vs Razorbacks - Grand Finals - Game 5

Sport

Electric was the atmosphere of the last basketball game for the seaon. Especially given toward the final two minutes. All quarters leading up to those dire and final seconds, woeful. It was like as if the Kings were teasing the crowd into a painful state of anticipation. Release in the moments of Ebi Ere's streaking start from the final time out all that was needed. They came excruciatingly close to losing out to the Razorbacks. Counting back all their missed free throws, it would have been a far larger winning margin. Sydney Kings, back-to-back winners of the NBL championship. Damn straight.

After-game buzz flowed on toward catching and flipping channels hoping for another highlight glimpse of the final moments that secured the minds of the 9000 strong support crowd. The other 609 was intermixed with rival supporters. With around eight months before the start of the new season, time to breathe and savour the spectacle.

DoFL 28: Snapped with a crackling pop

Occupied

Figuring things would be like any other—suicidal and repetitive—sizzles of the eardrum lasted beyond the initial second full of impact. Fanoodling switched and levers, connection to one of the power supplies met with an incorrect voltage. Expecting the moderate 230 volts the juice was sent into the box awaiting the arrival of 130. With a bright white flash and electrifying pop, the rings were on their way into the bloodstream. Left feeling a little blinded and a little deaf, the pen in hand took a little jump down a little crack of towers. Disorientation hummed the faint hint of bleeding eardrums and severed membranes.

Yesterday, at another station, the power supply of a computer worked on by another started smoking like a well-honed chainer. Thick and collected, the smoke gently rose toward the ceiling searching vainly for a sprinkler system not installed.

DoFL 27: Tool

Occupied

Fooled a couple of weeks back by the neutered Partition Zapper, the hunt was on for a better partition wiping program. Spotted within the comments on Download.com, a reference to what other reviewers saw as a better product and as free as a naked man. A quick zip over lines and mbrtool was spreading its way across the other disks used at the compound. Now hard disks can be confidently left formatted without the incessant notice of a "kernel boot failure" or some such "mounting error" from a Red Hat no longer used in the plan.

Standing and boxing

Comics

Two years or so and the comic box finally popped out of its flattened state into that of a respectable box. The comics had been sitting in their bags for quite some time and for no reason they just looked like they wanted to stand and breathe and get away from the cramp confines of weighing down each other's spine. An awkward feat at first, but the box soon made its stand. Then the comics joined in on the action. Comics aren't ever read the day they are bought. If they are read in the same month that's pretty good in itself. So there were issues that hadn't been read yet and these weren't going to sleep standing in the box. That would be privileged for those that had been completed. When all the sorting and shuffling came to an end no space remained after the "done" comics were in. Left outside, those yet to see eyeballs. Coincidence?
