A visibly latexed and invalid old guy sat waiting for the attack from above. In the next shot, nothing but a shell of the man remains, and a glimpse of a fat-arsed slug slimes away. We learn that Scully is a re-gifter as she passes on Mulder's Apollo 11 badge on to Doggett just to show that he's not alone. A blonde sound-alike version of Scully rocks up to fight the future. Definitely a fan of the X, Harrison lets her adoration for oddities get in the way of non-apparent professionalism. Acting more like a comicbook aficionado than an FBI agent Harrison fires of knowledge about past cases. Doggett does this, but not as blindly as she does.
So in what purists probably wanted to see, Harrison is jumped then we see Doggett fall down a hole. Both newcomers to the X-Files taken out of the picture. While investigating the disappearance of the agents, Mulder pulls a Fletch, giving his name as Alvin Kersch to the mad scientist on whose estate the agents were both last seen. Good thing Scully re-gifted, otherwise they wouldn't have a reason to be snooping around. Doesn't seem as though anyone listens anymore, Scully still works while on leave, Mulder has nothing better to do than hang around the FBI and the mad scientist just stepped on Doggett's hand when asked for help. That was one hell of a drop when he lost his grip.
You can tell I forgot the scientist's name, who turns out to be the reptilian creature they have been chasing and whom they initially for a few believed to be the harbourer. Chasing a genetic mutant, even if it was self-imposed, is stuff of the X-Men. Doggett re-gifts the badge to Harrison who learns that dreaming and reading of the X is better than being an entry in the Files.
The last scene had Scully and Mulder try and explain just how they got back from the Antartic in Fight the Future. Tbey tried. I still wait. One minute left for dead in a desert of ice and snow and the next, back to the fight in the city. There's a huge gap missing there. Like a shell.
