Big Day Out '03

Experienced moments of tension leading up to the actual day in which this feast of sensual manhandling would occur. Flooded with doubts and misgivings about actually being there at the old Sydney Olympics site and possibly the whole "getting sunburnt" aspect. But, in the end, having managed to get up before the entire day was wasted, decided to go and use the free ticket which might not have been were it not for serious pleas and apologies.

Trains were packed with a sweaty drenching of Ralph Lauren. A lot of the guys on the train were getting pre-drunk in case of running out of money on the food. It was the expected state of carnival food: small, messy and well over priced for standard fare. The lines into the whole area were outclassed by those of the toilets. Portable toilets they were not given the first class facilities back in 2000. The smell of sunscreen all over the place was nice to recognise again after leaving the house with a huge dose layered onto the nape and face.

Waikiki were up first and there was a sizable mosh crowd. Waikiki played some nice music but perhaps are better suited to something like a pop festival given that these kids were out to mosh and their songs didn't actually help them out in that area.

Left the Orange/Blue stages for the Lilypad. The ampitheatre was decked out with speakers that pretty much ruined the acousitcs of the ampitheatre itself. As a result the sound was garbled and made no resemblance to clarity. There was a scheduled Poetry Slam but a couple guys behind wanted the Nude Karoake to start. Both events were bad. The Slam came off as shouting and using the same words to make it all rhyme while the Karoake featured a lot of guys and a couple of girls getting fondled with a bearded man's head on a stick. Unsightly in all respects.

Bumped into a couple of friends while making a walk out of the Pad. Stood for no reason next to a shed shell spouting water. It was hot but a lot of the goths looked like they had the whole thing worked out without sweating. Should have tried the vaseline thing, boxers get over their brows. Wonder if it works?

There was music as The Music played and some drunk guy came up and asked to borrow the use of the long sleeve which was lighter than a normal T-shirt to clean his glasses. Apparently his own shirt was drenched in alcohol. A friend obliged his unusual request. Decision with two of the four that Millencolin might be something of a show. Chose to break paths as they wandered closer into the D-barrier. The acts at the Lilypad didn't get better as the day went on. Just louder.

Almost ended up outside prematurely while walking around with a roll of cheese, onions and no mustard in the mouth. Watched The Vines play to a lukewarm crowd from somewhere in the stands. Right outside a Nachos vendor.

An evacuation of the D-barrier saw this sea of rubbish covering the ground. When they returned to the pit they cooled down as Queens of the Stone Age played rather impotently. The Vines were better.

Then The Living End came on and heated up the mosh pit in no time. Excellent choice of songs which ended up being pretty much all of their old hits which are the type needed for crowd involvement.

The Lilypad did have one redeeming act. Kamahl. In a gloriously golden robe he sang—the sound was still bad but the talent was there—to the adoringly small crowd who hadn't left for either of the bigger names and stages. It was about time to head back to the Blue/Orange stages when he started singing something with the line: "and now, the time is near..." with some mention of a curtain.

Jane's Addiction were still on the stage, trying to milk the trapeze artist for all she was worth. Not sure if they overstayed as when shadows were moving over where the Foo Fighters were playing the entire atmosphere just lifted to a better state of rock. Finally after deciding that their time was up, Jane's Addicition left and the moshpit did so in kind shifting all over to the Blue Stage.

The riff of "All My Life" kicked everyone into what it was to know a band that kick arse. Of all the bands that played during the day they should have taken something from watching the Living End and following it up with an extreme dose of the Foo Fighters. "Disenchanted Lullaby" saw those with cigarette lighters oblige in the tradition of holding them alight in the night time sky. It was a disappointment to hear their last song, as it was their last song and they left the stage to a well worked over audience. Foo Fighters redeemed the whole day.

Managed to get stickered with something declaring the.movement.is.on a total of five times. The baggers were right behind during the Foos. Saw two fights nearly break out. Both involved a drunk, one was against a girl in a devil outfit with her friend in an angel's outfit holding her back and the other was just under the noses of the beer kegs in the glassed room next to the nachos.

Perhaps people didn't see the bins as there was a lot of garbage thrown from the balconies above.

Ate once during the entire eleven hour day. Drank 1.2 litres of water and suffered only a slight tanning of the neck where the sunscreen must have been sweated off. Despite at least an hour and a half left of music at various other locations in the area, chose to take the train home. Quieter and the eardrums weren't suffering as they were a week ago after Peabody.

Probably won't ever go to another Big Day Out no matter how good certain sections of Saturday was.
