DDH 38: In case of panic, flail toward emergency

Occupied

Closing out the week, a seconds long confrontation over security access. One naturally instigated by the security guard on duty at the time.

Months of late night getaways seen through a slamming succession of fire doors. Every now and then would see the guard casting a cautionary eye, a suspecting and concerned look at the choice of exit.

Nothing was ever said of this. Nothing really signalled any wrong doing on choosing to take over a half dozen flights down to the basement and up one to the ground. Nothing perhaps outside the occasional long and uncomfortable inspection and confirmation of the huge fire door clicking to a close.

Until tonight.

"Don't use this exit anymore, please," said the security guard in his generic suit. Standing there at the arc of the swing path to catch the blind spot. No idea on how long he'd been standing there waiting for his moment. "No, no, you're not in trouble," he added, walking back into the building. Too late, the feeling all the same. "Emergency use only, got it?" he added as the glass door closed behind him and he made his beat back toward the marble desk.

Out of the blue and obviously hiding more than just keeping the crazy door free from use at all times outside a fire. Tremors of apprehension rising to a boil and setting off an internal chain reaction of doubt and paranoia. There are no cameras or witnesses this way of the river.
