Friday was the last day of Welcome Week. In storage are a few hundred more student diaries and a load of boxes full of Cogitos. As the weeks will roll into each other the stock will slowly diminish. Some of the students have decided to go without a year of enlightenment as they fail to comprehend the quirkiness of this Publications Officer. One look at the cover of the diary and they refuse to be reminded of the raging bushfires of the summer of 2001-02.

The day went by with a blur of slightly charred sausages three times over, a mysteriously acquired papercut, multitudes of students unable to read signs on doors and the lost few who yet again managed to miss out on a free showbag. The line in front of the hole in the wall known as a bookshop rivals that of the line in front of the student centre. Having already purchased the comics in the morning and being dumbfounded at a fax machine asking for a station the afternoon was up to rest. 50 posters were run, only 13 needed to be.

The act was that of Shakaya and Diane Dias to play in a building far from everywhere else at the uni at a time everyone would rather be at home on a Friday. The production manager of Shakaya was far out groovy man. This cat's lingo was outta the 70s. Like a Brady, brother. Their set also happened to be nothing more than bass set well past eleven and shaking their arses on an even shakier stage. Lip-syncing was the go as they only did 3 CD tracks obsessed with phones and numbers. They smelled nice though after the gig as we chatted to them before they ran off again to meet some other commitment.

The follow-up act was Diane Dias; a sight better than the two and a whole lot more a better performer. Her set was well received to the dissipating crowd of twenty where condoms flew through the air between acts. It was a nice end to the first real week of uni.
