Thank God You're Here

Long time between the breaks, not quite long enough to warrant a clear cut in the year, but still significant enough to mark a return to improv and by-the-rip-of-pants TV theatre.

Hamish Blake, already in the intro with a nice and high coiffure, aims around in super tight jeans. Or pantaloons, whichever best serves the style and hood of a 1950s US lounge room setting. Easy into the ritual, the only long serving member returning in the first, Blake ramps up the sexual innuendo to a degree of blatant recoil by the buzzer's end. Action and handling of the scene is smooth, natural and as uncomfortable as seeing his legs fight for air.

New to the play set, Anh Do blanks out for more than the majority of his turn. Capturing his breath is all of what makes his time a game on song. Of course, most of it is hostile and there is always a little bit of fun in hostilities. And then it sours quick to leave a bad taste of urinal cake on the tongue.

Spinning the classic observation on tripped out bimbos, Cal Wilson co hosts a strip quiz show. Giggles are infectious and the pace is hyperactive. Nothing like watching the brain explode on national live TV for a serious bout of quality entertainment.

Slowing things down, Tony Martin finds himself on a cool, radical, awesome and hipster swing show about cool, radical and awesome things. Thing is, when one of the stand bys looks out of it, it doesn't make sense. And listening to old people talk the language of the kids is bad, just bad and embarrassing. Which makes it good, so good.

Knight of the round, or a rather oval-shaped table, close out as the all-in challenge. Shouting is always the way and stammering with a plight for a Brashes voucher buffs the comedy up to a gleamy sheen. It's a frantic affair with twisting names making it all light and fluffy.

Strangely enough, with Wilson or Blake offering the best comebacks and runs, Do takes the trophy despite never at once feeling like he's enjoying the time or knowing how to play.
