A small yet noticable ad was placed in the Daily Telegraph on Friday. The call was to Afro-Americans, Hispanics, Islanders, Asians and those of similar skin type to head over to the Newtown Theatre on King Street. They were looking for extras to blur in the next two Matrix sequels.
From the train station at Redfern it was easy to guess who would be lining up to try out for it. They weren't anglo-saxon. Newtown was an area seen only in directories prior to Saturday. It was only ten minutes past ten yet the line was pretty impressive. Out past the door, in front of a salon, past a church, and in front of a school. People kept coming and the line kept getting longer and longer. Those that had no idea what was going on were perplexed as they drove or walked by. From the school to the church, past the salon and up the stairs it all took an hour. In the stairwell and the group inside the door were told "...Thank you all for giving up your Saturday morning...Don't call us, we'll call you...I'm sure you're all lovely, wonderful and talented people, but if you don't ever get a call for either block, you weren't the kind of talented, beautiful person we were looking for...don't be disheartened..."
Then when the lady of what seemed like 28 handed out a form the question was asked, "Are you over 18?" Looking a little too young from excessively drinking plain water. The form was similar to something seen before. Name, age, contact number, vital stats. Height was easy, 178cm. Waist, hips and chest were somewhat leftfield. The belt was a good guess, and the waist was a little off that. 27 for the chest looks odd and unhealthy. Then a big 418 was drawn on the back of the form. A digital head-torso pose with 418 by the side later, and the steps were seen again. In all, no more than 80 minutes was spent, nothing else to do on a Saturday. It would be nice to be what they wanted for either the post-Easter or June shoots.
A past due, partly melted nougat roll was had on the way home.
