Take a morning session and miss that on a guess. Miss an early matinee session on account of miscalculating the midday trains. Finally come up good on the late afternoon and the cinema is thankfully fairly quiet. Save for the screaming baby running in an out in a pram.
Christopher Nolan, Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Michael Caine and Scarlett Johansson. With all these names and a setting of the late 19th century with a twist of magic and illusion, it was never really going to disappoint. With a bit of David Bowie and Andy Serkis, it was hard seeing how it could.
Fruitfully, the entire tapestry and ragged feel of the environment is a stunning work of visual coarseness that rubs smooth despite the blood on the hands. Londoners all round for the flavour, the accents are a treat to listen to, the city and the ambience ringing as true as the skill in their deftness.
Disturbing is the sensation on walking out after the final and the close. A run and duel of two magicians at the top of their game and the lengths they will go to to be the best and prove the other worthless. Stunning in its duplicity, the heart and mind are shivering in its wake.
