Time and relative head scratching

Only a few days ago the Doctor of Doctor Who switched from William Hartnell to that of Patrick Troughton. No transition episode shown; they also happen to change the support cast. The spaceman is gone and a Scot by the name of Jamie takes hold with the thick. Switched too are the girls from unintroduced Dodo to Victoria to Zoe in the short span of five misaligned episodes. Blacking out while watching it doesn't make things easier to handle or grasp.
